General: Certified Medical Scribe Specialists

General Certified Medical Scribe Specialists (clinical informatics/medical assistive) are instrumental in a variety of practice settings, across the specialities.  the function of a primary care physician’s office.  They become a vital part of a healthcare provide team and can provide the following functions:

  • Administrative (As directed by the Physician):
    1. Using computer applications and electronic medical records (EMR)
    2. Handling correspondence with patients and other healthcare providers
    3. Answering telephones, scheduling appointments, and greeting patients
    4. Scribing, updating and filing patient medical records
    5. Assisting with coding and payor-insurance forms

    2. Preparing patients for examination

    5. Prepare procedure trays as directed by a physicians
    6. Authorizing prescription refills as directed by the physician
      *CMS recognizes Certified Medical Scribe Specialists (CMSS) toward pended order entry for CPOE (i.e., labs, medication, radiology), per Physician/CMSS team across the healthcare enterprise
    7. Customizable full scope of CMSS credential:  Clinical informatics/medical assistive duties, per speciality, per physician

In addition, medical scribes can be can important in helping patients feel at ease in the physician’s office and often explain certain care instructions, under the supervision of a physician or other healthcare provider.  Certified Medical Scribe Specialists are essential members of a patient-centered medical team.
