Kristin Hagen, CMSS™
Clinical Informatics/Wellness
ACMSS™, Executive Director
ACCDO, Executive Director

Kristin Hagen is a specialist in clinical informatics, and health and wellness, and has been involved in both regional and national efforts as a technical expert to define and develop electronic health record specifications. As executive director of ACMSS™, and executive director of ACCDO, she is committed to helping create a patient-safe, patient-centric healthcare system nationwide. Throughout her career, she has been an advocate for transforming our nation’s healthcare system from one that is volume-based and focused on a disease to a value-based system that focuses on prevention, wellness, and precision medicine.

Kristin provides a wide range of perspectives on health information technology, including those of a national healthcare advocate, a hands-on care provider, and clinical and nursing informatics professional. She has gained a deep knowledge of evolving patient/client models of the U.S. healthcare system. Her work with ACMSS™ includes improving curricula, and credentialing and certification compliance standards for medical scribes across the country.

At ACMSS™, Kristin promotes meaningful use of health information technology throughout the healthcare system.  She also advocates nationally for a smooth transition to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) and its Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for clinicians. She is particularly interested in the quality and ethics of clinical care.

Kristin has volunteered her time and expertise with Washington-Idaho’s Regional Extension Center (WIREC/Qualis Health), Idaho Health Data Exchange (IHDE), and the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology (CCHIT).

Kristin is Commissioner with American College of Medical Scribe Specialists with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Medical Scribe Specialist Education Review Board. The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists is the sole sponsor of the accredited Medical Scribe Specialist curriculum. She has been active in curriculum development for medical scribes and in expanding the scope of their credential to improve the value of scribes to healthcare provider organizations. She has been involved in both regional and national efforts as a technical expert to define and develop EHR specifications, and she is currently a member of the CMS “Clinician Voices” stakeholder participation ad hoc committee.

Kristin is a two-time original airbag injury survivor who did not achieve true recovery until utilizing integrative medicine in a structured wellness plan. After discovering integrative medicine that focuses on all components of a patient’s health—including the physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects—she was finally able to achieve meaningful results and feel like her true self again. Upon discovering this type of medicine, she decided to make it her life’s mission to grow the field and raise awareness of its benefits. A wellness and nutrition coach, she is a proponent of getting well, staying well and making good life choices. Ms. Hagen is the author of Align Above: My Passionate Dance at Life, a memoir published in 2018, focused on wellness through integrative medicine. A lifetime healthcare informatics professional, she is also Executive Director of the American College of Medical Scribe Specialists and the American College of Clinical Documentation Outcomes.
