ORANGE, CA., June 20, 2016. The American College of Medical Scribe Specialists enables all scribes a certification pathway to meet Personnel Measure with CMS of “who” may document in the Electronic Health Record.  “Certified Medical Scribe Specialists” (CMSS) in order to meet Meaningful Use federal requirements.  All personnel through the personnel measure, who enter electronic data into the EMR, from single task, up to and including Computerized Provider Order Entry, must be certified,” said ACMSS Executive Director Kristin Hagen.  CMS recognizes Certified Medical Scribe Specialists and “plug and play” crosswalk.  “CMS has asked that each clinician/provider/practice retain a copy of the Specialist crosswalk and certification documentation in their files just as they would retain documentation outlining their individual approach and method, as well as staffing protocols for audit purposes.”

“All of our programs are evolving in order to streamline the process for individuals, educational companies, academic institutions and providers to get their scribes certified, and provide greater value for their training scribes, students, and employees,” says Kristin Hagen, Executive Director of ACMSS.

The five pathways are:

Individual Pathway: Those who work in clinical settings as medical scribes may sign an affidavit attesting that they have completed a minimum of 200 hours of unassisted clinician workload documentation, and then complete the Medical Scribe Certification Aptitude Test (MSCAT) administered through ACMSS.

Retooling Pathway: Individuals who work in related fields such as transcription and coding may use the Retooling Pathway, which requires them to first receive medical scribe training before certifying.

1-Step “CMSS” Pathway for Scribe Training Companies: Through our new 1-Step Certification Pathway, educational companies can become corporate member partners. The annual corporate membership allows corporate partners to certify their scribes, institute innovative practice procedures and provide educational materials for their scribes. To become a corporate member partner and participate in the 1-Step Certification Pathway, a company must attest in an affidavit that its education programs meets all of the curriculum content requirements, and submit the curriculum to the ACMSS board for approval.

Academic Institution Pathway: ACMSS offers a program similar to the 1-Step pathway for Academic Partners whose medical scribe curriculum content conforms to standards approved by the Board of ACMSS.  These standards are mirrored in core eligibility requirements, clinically and non-clinically, for accredited academic institutions across America, as set forth by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

Physician/Practice Pathway: Physicians and practices may also self-certify their staffs. ACMSS provides specialty certifications to all in General certifications, in addition to presenting specialty certifications in vascular medicine, dermatology, primary care, internal medicine and emergency medicine. ACMSS serves as a resource to physicians/mid-levels, through enablement of fully credentialed professionals, adhering to federal regulations and guidance.  Clinicians and practices are enabled through eligible staff and purchasing Volume Certification Package Bundles.

The ACMSS certification program meets current and proposed CMS certification requirements toward use of electronic health records. ACMSS works independently in compliance with CMS to meet national goals and initiatives of MACRA and MIPS. Certified medical scribes also meet the “qualified people” standard in Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT).
